Know what the sample covers.
The cash log contains made-up data for one account and period. It is a learning example, not a complete accounting, tax, payroll or business-control system. Check your own changes and the result in the spreadsheet application you use.
Use the current version deliberately.
Check the project page for the file version, requirements and verification notes. Downloading a newer version does not update copies you have already edited.
